Recovery from trauma is possible
EMDR & Trauma Therapy for Adults
Virtual therapy for adults in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Ontario
Sometimes difficult or traumatic experiences continue to affect us long after they have passed.
You may be living with the effects of childhood experiences, a frightening or overwhelming event, or memories that continue to bring up anxiety, fear, shame, or distress. You may know exactly where these feelings come from, or you may simply recognize patterns or reactions that have been difficult to move beyond.
Trauma therapy can help you better understand these reactions, process difficult experiences, and reduce the impact they continue to have on your life.
I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy online as one of the treatment approaches that can be helpful with trauma.
Childhood Trauma
Experiences from childhood can continue to affect us well into adulthood.
Childhood trauma can result from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, loss, unpredictable caregiving, or growing up in an environment where you did not consistently feel safe, supported, or emotionally secure.
The effects are not always obvious. You may not experience clear memories or flashbacks but instead notice patterns that have followed you into adulthood.
You might struggle with trusting others, setting boundaries, feeling good enough, managing conflict, having emotions, or feeling safe in close relationships. You may be highly sensitive to rejection, experience anxiety, or shame, or find yourself reacting strongly to situations without fully understanding why.
Therapy can help you explore these patterns and understand how experiences from your past may be influencing how you feel, respond, and relate to others today.
Trauma From an Overwhelming Event
Trauma can also result from a single frightening, distressing, or overwhelming experience.
This might include:
- A car accident
- An assault
- A sudden or traumatic loss
- A frightening medical experience
- A natural disaster
- Witnessing a traumatic event
- Another experience in which you felt frightened, helpless, or unsafe
After an overwhelming event, you may experience intrusive memories, nightmares, anxiety, avoidance, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling of constantly being on guard.
For many people, these reactions gradually become less intense. For others, they continue and begin interfering with everyday life, relationships, work, sleep, or their ability to feel safe.
You may want to consider seeking support if you are:
- Having distressing memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
- Experiencing anxiety, fear, shame, anger, or emotional overwhelm
- Avoiding people, places, conversations, or situations that remind you of what happened
- Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
- Feeling constantly alert, tense, or unable to relax
- Having difficulty trusting or feeling close to others
- Struggling with negative beliefs about yourself
- Finding that past experiences are affecting your relationships or everyday life
Sometimes people seek therapy because they recognize a specific traumatic experience. Others come because they recognize the effects but are only beginning to understand where they may have originated.
How Trauma Therapy Can Help
Trauma therapy is not about forgetting what happened or pretending that it did not matter. The goal is to help you process what you have experienced so that it has less influence over how you feel and live today.
Trauma therapy may help you:
- Understand your emotional reactions and patterns
- Process difficult memories, thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations
- Develop strategies for managing anxiety, intrusive memories, and emotional overwhelm
- Recognize coping patterns and strategies that may have developed as ways of protecting yourself
- Reduce the emotional intensity connected to painful memories
- Develop a greater sense of emotional safety and stability
- Strengthen boundaries and relationships
- Develop new ways of understanding yourself and your experiences
Therapy is individualized to your therapy needs and goals.
EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the treatment approaches I offer for trauma.
EMDR is a structured form of therapy designed to help people process distressing experiences and memories that continue to feel emotionally overwhelming or “stuck.”
During EMDR, you are not required to describe every detail of a traumatic experience. Instead, the therapy uses a structured process that includes bilateral stimulation and dual attention stimulation while working with memories, thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations associated with the experience.
Over time, the goal is for the memory to become less distressing and have less influence over your reactions in the present.
EMDR may be used when working with childhood trauma, PTSD, car accidents, assaults, frightening medical experiences, traumatic losses, and other distressing or overwhelming experiences.
EMDR is one treatment option and may not be the right approach for everyone. Whether we use EMDR—and when we use it—will depend on your history, current needs, comfort level, and therapy goals.
Can EMDR Be Done Virtually?
Yes. EMDR can be provided through virtual therapy.
Before beginning EMDR, we will spend time understanding what brings you to therapy, discussing your goals, and determining whether EMDR is an appropriate approach for you.
Trauma therapy does not mean that you will immediately be asked to revisit your most difficult experiences. Developing trust, understanding your responses, and making sure you have strategies for managing difficult emotions are important parts of the process.
